Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined a critical analyses of students’ access to Abdu Gusau Polytechnic (AGP) FM, Talata Mafara, at 90.1MHz). The research aimed to investigate the extent to which students access the FM station to understand in what way students acquire practical skills, and the opportunities are given to them for their academic and professional development. By extension to find out the challenges that hinder effective utilization. The study adopted the survey method, using a structured questionnaire administered to students from different departments of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic. Out of 100 questionnaires distributed, 83 were retrieved and analyzed. Data were presented in frequency tables and percentages. Findings revealed that the FM station provides significant prospects such as practical broadcasting experience, enhancement of creativity, information dissemination, and opportunities for career development. Students tend to display initiatives, enthusiasm and broadcast practice than they do in classes. However, major challenges identified include inadequate staffing meant to manage the radio house, programme sponsorship by host community and lack of motivation to the volunteer students by the radio management. The study concluded that while AGP FM at 90.1 is an invaluable academic and professional resource, its potential is constrained by structural and operational challenges. The research recommends increased institutional funding, improved student involvement and motivation, and enhanced awareness campaigns to maximize the station’s role in student development.
