Abstract

Streams contaminated by effluents pose increasing environmental risks due to the high presence of organic matter, chemical pollutants, and heavy metals capable of degrading soil quality, polluting groundwater, and affecting nearby aquatic ecosystems. This study focuses on assessing the microbial load of such contaminated streams and evaluating the effectiveness of filtration in reducing bacterial contamination. Standard microbiological techniques were employed to isolate and identify microorganisms from the effluent samples, with species such as Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus being detected. Initial microbial analysis revealed a bacterial load of 1.8 × 10⁴ CFU/mL. Following treatment with effective membrane filtration, this count decreased to 1.5 × 10⁴ CFU/mL, demonstrating a measurable reduction in microbial presence. Notably, the filtration process significantly suppressed the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, indicating its potential in selectively reducing pathogenic species. These findings underscore the importance of employing filtration technologies in the treatment of effluents. The application of such methods can substantially lower microbial contamination, thereby enhancing environmental safety and promoting sustainable wastewater discharge practices.
