PERCEIVED PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT OF THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS IN OKE-MAPO HEALTH CENTER, OWO, ONDO STATE
Abstract
Hypertension is a prevalent health issue globally, with significant implications for both
physical and psychological well-being. This study aimed to assess the perceived
psychological effect of therapeutic interventions among hypertensive patients attending Oke-
mapo Health Centre in Owo, Ondo State. A descriptive crosssectional research design was
employed, utilizing a multi-stage sampling technique to select 148 participants. Data was
collected through structured questionnaires, focusing on participants' perceived psychological
effects of therapeutic interventions and their socio-economic characteristics. Analysis using
descriptive and inferential statistics, specifically Chi-square revealed a statistically significant
relationship (p < 0.05) between the perceived psychological effects of therapeutic
interventions and participants' socio-economic characteristics. Specifically, findings indicated
that a substantial proportion of hypertensive patients experienced negative perceived effects
of therapeutic interventions related to their condition. Furthermore, participants demonstrated
awareness of and engagement in non-pharmacological management strategies for
hypertension. The study underscores the importance of considering the psychological impact
of therapeutic interventions in the management of hypertension. It highlights the need for
healthcare providers to adopt holistic approaches that address both physical and
psychological aspects of the condition. Additionally, the findings emphasize the significance
of patient education and empowerment in promoting self-care practices for hypertensive
individuals. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on hypertension
management and underscores the importance of patient-centred care in addressing the
complex needs of hypertensive patients.
