HEAVY METAL TOLERANCE OF BACTERIAL ISOLATES FROM SELECTED DUMPSITES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigates the ability of bacterial isolates from selected dumpsites in Lagos State, Nigeria, to tolerate heavy metals commonly found in leachate. Samples were collected and cultured to identify predominant bacteria, after which their resistance to metals such as lead, cadmium, zinc, and chromium was assessed. Results revealed varying tolerance levels, with some isolates showing strong resistance that suggests adaptation to polluted environments. These findings highlight the potential use of certain bacteria in bioremediation, while also emphasising the environmental and public health risks associated with persistent heavy metal contamination in waste sites.
