THE IMPACT OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION ON POVERTY ALLEVATIONS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of trade liberalization on poverty alleviation in Nigeria, considering the relationship between the opening of the economy to international trade and the standard of living of the population. The study seeks to answer the following research questions: What is the trend and pattern of poverty rate in Nigeria? To what extent have government-initiated programmes contributed to poverty alleviation? What is the impact of trade liberalization on poverty alleviation in Nigeria? What policy recommendations can be made to reduce poverty through trade reforms?
The main objectives are to analyze poverty trends, evaluate government efforts in poverty reduction, examine the link between trade liberalization and poverty, and propose actionable policy suggestions. The study adopts a quantitative research methodology, relying on secondary data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin and other credible sources covering the period 1986 to 2016. The theoretical framework is based on the comparative advantage theory and liberal economic theory, which posit that free trade can spur growth and development.
