Abstract

In the evolving landscape of digital communication, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have emerged as critical tools for safeguarding data transmission, ensuring privacy, and enabling secure remote access to network resources. With the increasing reliance on remote work, particularly in academic and research environments, the demand for robust VPN solutions has grown significantly. This project focuses on the design and implementation of a secure, scalable, and high-performance VPN system tailored for the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology. The primary aim is to establish a reliable platform that allows staff and authorized users to access institutional resources from remote locations without compromising data confidentiality, integrity, or availability. The study was driven by the need to address critical challenges such as unauthorized access, data interception, and disruptions in connectivity, which pose threats to academic operations. Modern VPN technologies, specifically WireGuard and Cisco VPN solutions, were utilized due to their proven efficiency, advanced encryption mechanisms, and ease of integration into existing infrastructure. The system was developed following the principles of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), encompassing requirement gathering, system analysis, architectural design, implementation, testing, and evaluation. To validate performance and reliability, the implemented VPN was subjected to rigorous testing using the iPerf3 network performance measurement tool. Key metrics assessed included connection establishment time, bandwidth utilization, latency, and data transfer throughput across various client devices and network conditions. The results demonstrated that the VPN successfully maintained encrypted communication channels while handling multiple concurrent connections without significant degradation in performance. Moreover, testing confirmed the system’s ability to provide consistent access speed and preserve data integrity even under heavy network load. In conclusion, the designed VPN system offers a practical and effective solution for secure remote access within academic institutions, enhancing operational flexibility and ensuring the protection of sensitive academic and administrative data. Beyond its immediate application, the solution serves as a replicable model for other educational and research institutions seeking to strengthen their digital security frameworks while supporting modern remote work demands. For future purpose researcher can invests in continuous monitoring and periodic upgrades of the VPN infrastructure to adapt to evolving cyber threats. Also, they should consider integrating multi-factor authentication (MFA) with the VPN system to enhance security against credential-based attacks. Finally, scaling the solution with cloud-based infrastructure could further improve accessibility, resilience, and cost-effectiveness in the long term.
