PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE LEAF AND BACK OF ANONA SENEGALENCES
Abstract
Abstract
Anona senegalensis, a traditional medicinal plant in West Africa, has been used to treat various ailments. However, its phytochemical constituents and biological activities remain poorly understood. To investigate the phytochemical profile, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities of Anona senegalensis leaf and bark. Phytochemical analysis was performed using TLC, HPLC, and GC-MS. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using agar well diffusion method. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging assay. Cytotoxic activity was determined using MTT assay. The study revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides in the leaf and bark. Antimicrobial activity was observed against bacterial and fungal pathogens. Antioxidant activity was demonstrated with IC50 values ranging from 10-50 μg/mL. Cytotoxic activity was exhibited against cancer cell lines.
This study provides evidence for the phytochemical and biological activities of Anona senegalensis, supporting its traditional use in medicine. The findings suggest potential applications in the development of phytopharmaceuticals
