IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY MASS SPECTROPHOTOMETRY (LCMS) CHARACTERIZATION OF DRIED AQUEOUS LEAVES EXTRACT OF AFRICAN PLANT LEPTEDENIA HASTATA
Abstract
This study focuses on dried aqueous leave extract of leptedenia hastata (DALEL)was
carried out using standard procedure that resulted in recovering crude extract=130g
extract=13.569, percentage yield (10.44% yield). The antioxidant activity of the extract was
evaluated through standard procedure, the results indicates increase in the activity with
increase in concentration. DPPH scavenging assay, H202 scavenging assay, ferric reducing
antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were found to range
from 39.025±0.785-32.83±1.485 (DPPH scavenging assay), 24.33±0.127-14.325±0.219
(H202 scavenging assay), 0.662±0.0057- 0.296±0.0099 (FRAP) assay and 0.605±0.0120-
0.2245±0.0035 total antioxidant capacity (TAC) respectively. The liquid chromatography
mass spectroscopy (LCMS ) characterization revealed the presence of active compounds
which include maleamic acid, succinamic acid, malonamic acid, Engelharolide
(methoxyphenols) ,2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxy 3,4-dihydro-2H-1 benzopyran-
4-one (flavononols), 7-bromo-4-methyl-3,4-dihydro-1(2H) napthalenone, 5,7-dihydroxy-2(4-
hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)4, 4-chromen-4-one(3'-0 methylated flavonoids), 6"-o-p
coumaroylglycosides .Therefore, the results indicate that the aqueous extract has significant
activity and possess biological activity.
