PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF GRACINAL KOLA (BITTER KOLA) AGAINST HORMONE DISRUPTION CAUSED BY SODIUM FLORIDE-INDUCED TOXICITY IN MALE WISTER RAT
Abstract
This study aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the phytochemical constituents of Garcinia kolaand evaluate its protective efficacy against NaF- induced hormonal disruption in male Wistar rats. Thirty-six (36) male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to six groups (n=6). Group A (Control) received tap water; Group B received NaF (300 ppm) in drinking water adlibitum; Groups C and D received Garciniakolaextract (Kolaviron) at 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg, respectively; Groups E and F received NaF (300 ppm) plus Kolaviron at 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg, respectively. The treatment lasted for eight days. Serum was collected via retro-orbital plexus, and hormonal assays (ELISA) were conducted to measure testosterone and other relevant hormones. Phytochemical screening of aqueous and petroleum ether extracts was performed using standard qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc test (p
