Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the impact of sub-chronic oral administration of polyherbal tea formulation F4 on kidney function parameters in albino rats. Key renal health indicators—serum urea, creatinine, and uric acid—were measured to assess potential nephrotoxicity. Group A (control) exhibited the lowest levels of urea, creatinine, and uric acid, serving as a baseline for normal renal function. Group B (treated with F4) showed non-significant increases in these markers, indicating minimal nephrotoxic effects from the polyherbal formulation alone. In contrast, Group C (treated with F4 and sucrose) displayed significantly elevated serum urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels, highlighting a potential risk for renal impairment when the formulation is combined with sucrose. Group D (treated with F4 and honey) demonstrated significantly lower levels of these kidney function markers compared to Group C, suggesting that honey may have nephroprotective properties. Group E (treated with commercial tea) presented moderate renal markers, with values closer to the control group, indicating that commercial teas may support renal function better than the polyherbal formulation combined with sweeteners. Phytochemical analysis of formulation F4 revealed high concentrations of alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, which may contribute to its antioxidant and nephroprotective potential. However, the combination of F4 with high sugar intake poses a risk of renal stress, warranting caution. These findings suggest that while polyherbal formulations like F4 may offer therapeutic benefits, their use in combination with certain sweeteners could compromise kidney function over prolonged exposure. The study confirms the importance of evaluating the safety profiles of herbal formulations, particularly in conjunction with dietary components, to promote optimal renal health.
