Abstract

Abstract: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term neurological disability, often associated with neuroinflammation and microglial activation. Tinospora cordifolia (TC), a medicinal plant known for its neuroprotective properties, has been investigated for its potential role in post-stroke recovery. This study evaluates the neurorestorative effects of TC alkaloids on microglial activation, using IBA-1 expression as a biomarker, in the parieto-temporal cortex of a rat model of ischemic stroke. Rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) were treated with TC alkaloids, and subsequent immunohistochemical analysis assessed changes in IBA-1 expression. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in IBA-1 expression in TC-treated rats compared to untreated stroke controls, indicating attenuated microglial activation and enhanced neurorestoration. These findings suggest that TC alkaloids may modulate post-stroke neuroinflammatory responses and support their potential as a therapeutic agent for promoting neuronal recovery. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects.
