DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF LAND INFORMATION SYSTEM
Abstract
The administration and management of land records are crucial components of governance,
especially in rapidly urbanizing regions. In many parts of Nigeria, the traditional manual system
of land information management is plagued with inefficiencies such as data duplication, fraud, loss
of records, and lack of transparency. To address these issues, this project focuses on the design
and implementation of a Web-Based Land Information System (LIS) tailored for the Kano State
Ministry of Land and Tourism.
The system digitizes key land registration processes including owner registration, parcel allocation,
record search, report generation, and data backup. It provides a centralized and secure platform
that enhances the efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of land-related information. The system
was developed using PHP, SQLite, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, with TCPDF used to generate
official reports in PDF format. A three-tier architecture was adopted to ensure modularity,
maintainability, and scalability.
Security features such as password hashing and session-based authentication were implemented to
prevent unauthorized access. The system also supports CSV import/export functionality for data
migration and backup purposes. The user interface was designed to be intuitive and responsive,
ensuring ease of use across different devices.
The system was tested for functionality, performance, and usability, and results showed significant
improvements over existing manual systems in terms of speed, data integrity, and user experience.
While the current implementation does not include GIS integration or mobile support, these
features can be added in future enhancements.
This Land Information System offers a practical solution for small to medium-scale land registry
offices aiming to improve transparency, reduce corruption, and streamline administrative
processes through digital transformation.
