EFFECT OF BLENDED LEARNING STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS IN EKET LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study was carried out to examine the effect of blended learning strategy on students’ academic achievement in Mathematics secondary school in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. In order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quasi-experimental design. The population of the study consisted of 1552 secondary school two (SS2) students in the eight co-educational public secondary schools in Eket Local Government Area. . A total of 100 (SS2) students were used as the sample for the study. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for the study was “Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT)". The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A reliability coefficient of .82 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder-Richardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there is significant difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught the concept of simultaneous equations using blended learning and traditional lecture methods; there is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught the concept of simultaneous equations using blended learning; and there is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught the concept of simultaneous equations using traditional lecture method. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that blended learning strategy enhanced students’ academic achievement in Mathematics secondary school in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It was recommended among others that, schools management should encourage teachers to incorporate the blended teaching method into their teaching methods to improve students' academic achievement.
