DAY LIGHTING IN LIBRARY BUILDING DESIGN; UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY, UGWUOMU-NIKE, ENUGU.
Abstract
This project explores the integration of natural lighting in library design, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and practical applications. Natural lighting not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of library spaces but also plays a crucial role in improving the well-being and productivity of users. The study examines various architectural strategies and design principles that optimise natural light usage, such as the orientation of the building, the use of skylights, clerestory windows, and light shelves. Case studies of modern libraries, including the University of Lagos Library and the Godfrey Okoye University Library, are analysed to illustrate practical implementations of natural lighting. Additionally, the project evaluates the environmental and economic impacts of using natural light, emphasising energy savings and sustainability. Through a combination of literature review, architectural analysis, and empirical data, this project aims to provide comprehensive guidelines for incorporating natural lighting into library designs to create more inviting, energy-efficient, and user-friendly spaces.
