EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC LEAVE EXTRACT OF CRASSULACEA AND BISOPROLOL ON TOTAL AND CONJUGATED BILIRUBIN LEVEL AND CYTOARCHITECTURE OF THE LIVER IN A HIGH SALT FED RAT
Abstract
The study is to investigate the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Crassulacea and bisoprolol on the total and conjugated bilirubin level and cytoarchitecture of the liver in a high salt fed wistar rat. A total no of 35 wistar rats were divided into five (5) groups with each group containing a total number of seven wistar rats each. Group 1- Normal control, Group 2- Na only, group 3 CRA only, group 4- Na + CRA, group 5- Na + BIS. Animals in group one was allowed normal chow and water ad libitum. Animals in group 2 were given chow containing 8% of salt mixed with 92g of feed and 1% of salt dissolved in 1000mls of water ad libitium. Animals in group 3 were given normal chow and 600ml/kg of crassulacea. Also animals in group 4 were given chow containing salt in the same proportion as that in group 3 and 600ml/kg of CRA. Animals in group 5 were given chow containing salt as in group 3 and 4 and 5mg of BIS in 10ls of water. The administration of Na, CRA and BIS lasted for 28 days. The animals were anesthetized by chloroform inhalation and sacrificed. Blood were collected via cardiac puncture and centrifuged before it was taken for assessment after which the result was analyzed. The result for the total bilirubin level include normal control group (5.1±0.33), Na only (4.9±0.11), CRA only group (3.5±0.093), Na+ CRA (11±0.45), Na+BIS (7.8±0.19). The results shows that the serum total bilirubin level of the result showed that the total bilirubin level of animals that received Na+CRA (11±0.45) and Na+BIS (7.8±0.19) were significantly (P
