EFFECTS OF FOOD COLOUR ADDITIVES (E110 AND E129) ON GASTRIC HOMEOSTASIS OF WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Food color additives, particularly synthetic dyes such as Sunset Yellow (E110) and Allura Red (E129), are widely used in processed foods to enhance visual appeal. The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of E110 and E129 on the gastric homeostasis of Wistar rats. Forty male wistar rats weighing between 90-100g were used for this study. The rats were randomized into five groups of eight animals each. Animals in group A (control) were orally administered distilled water, while groups B, C, D and E received 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of Red-velvet respectively, Administration lasted for two-weeks and the rats were sacrificed. Biochemical and histological evaluations were carried out to assess gastric integrity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response. Results revealed significant increase (p < 0.05) in malondialdehyde (MDA), Tumor Necrosis factors alpha (TNF-α), Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels compared to the control. Significant decrease (p < 0.05) in Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Reduced Glutathione (GSH) levels were also observed. The findings show that continuous exposure to E110 and E129 disrupts gastric homeostasis and may pose a risk to gastrointestinal integrity.
