Abstract
This research critically examines the role of broadcasting in promoting peace among residents of Lagos State, using the television program “People’s Court” on the NTA Network as a case study. In a society increasingly plagued by conflicts and disputes, the media—especially television—plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and encouraging peaceful resolution of issues. The study aimed to assess the extent to which the People’s Court program influences viewers’ attitudes towards conflict resolution, promotes civic behavior, and contributes to peace building within the Lagos metropolis. A survey method was adopted, and data was gathered using structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 111 respondents residing across different parts of Lagos. Findings revealed a high level of awareness and consistent viewership of the program among respondents. The majority affirmed that the program encourages peaceful conflict resolution, legal awareness, and tolerance among viewers. Respondents also agreed that the dramatized real-life scenarios presented in the show help in reinforcing moral and civic values. Based on the findings, the study concludes that television programs like People’s Court can be effective tools for public education and peace promotion. It recommends that media houses should invest more in socially responsible programming and that government and stakeholders should support media initiatives aimed at fostering peace and civic enlightenment
