THE IMPACT OF TAX PLANNING ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING COMPANIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impact of tax planning on the financial performance of manufacturing
companies in Nigeria. Tax planning, a critical component of corporate financial strategy,
enables firms to legally minimize tax liabilities and enhance after-tax income. The research
investigates how tax planning strategies influence key financial performance indicators,
including Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and Earnings Before Interest and
Taxes (EBIT). Utilizing a quantitative approach, the study analyzes secondary data from
selected Nigerian manufacturing firms over a 10-year period (2013–2022). Statistical
techniques such as correlation and multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the
relationship between tax planning and financial performance. The findings reveal a significant
positive relationship between effective tax planning and financial performance metrics,
indicating that firms with robust tax strategies experience enhanced profitability, improved
cash flow, and reduced effective tax rates. The study concludes that tax planning is not merely
a compliance function but a strategic tool that contributes to competitive advantage and
sustainable business growth. It recommends that manufacturing firms invest in specialized tax
planning systems and align tax strategies with broader corporate goals. Additionally,
policymakers are urged to promote transparent and incentive-driven tax regulations that
encourage effective tax planning across the industry.
