Abstract

ABSTRACT The construction industry significantly contributes to environmental degradation through the generation of vast amounts of waste. This study investigates the sustainable management and potential reuse of construction waste within Ajayi Crowther University, Nigeria. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved structured questionnaires distributed to construction stakeholders and detailed observations at three major construction sites on campus. Findings reveal that wood, concrete debris, and metal scraps are the dominant waste streams, with waste handling primarily reliant on unsustainable practices such as open dumping and burning. Despite moderate awareness among stakeholders of sustainable alternatives, implementation is limited due to infrastructural, institutional, and educational barriers. The study proposes a structured framework for waste segregation, training programs, policy development, and partnerships with recycling firms. It concludes that with appropriate institutional commitment and stakeholder engagement, Ajayi Crowther University can serve as a model for sustainable construction waste management in Nigerian academic institutions.
