EFFECT OF CARICA PAPAYA SEED ON PEPTIC ULCER HEALING
Abstract
Peptic ulcer is a sore that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract especially the stomach, duodenum, oesophagus; that result from an imbalance between endogenous and factors. The causes of peptic ulcer are multi-factorial which includes stress, use of NSAIDs, Helicobacter pylori infections, alcohol, smoking; family history etc. This study is to investigate the effects of carica papaya seed on peptic ulcer in wistar rats. A total of 28 Wistar rats were used in this study and were randomly divided into 4 groups Group A was used as the positive control group and were adminstered only water and feed. Group B which served as the negative control group recieved only 25mg/kg of indomethacin. Group C received 25mg/kg of indomethacin and were treated with 200mg/kg of aqueous seed extract of carica papaya. Group D received 25mg/kg of indomethacin and were treated with 400mg/kg of aqueous secd extract of carica papaya. The extract was administered for 7 days via oral route after which the animal were anaesthetized with diethyl ether in a closed container and peptic index was counted using hand lens. Using a significant p ≤ 0.05, Results show that there was a significant decrease in stomach ulcer index when group B is compared with group C and group D (p =0.00, p. =0.00) as well as a significant increase in stomach ulcer index comparing group A to group B(p =0.00). There was significant increase in duodenum ulcer on comparing group A to group B (p =0.00) with a significant decline in the mean value of group B to group C and D (p =0.00, p =0.00). The body weight was significantly decreased in mean value of group B and group D when compared to A (p =0.05, p=0.01) whereas there was significant reduction in change of average body weight (p =0.01) comparing group C to D. There was no significant effect of carica papaya seed on comparing the relative weight of duodenum whereas a significant decrease in relative weight of the stomach from group A to B (p =0.04) and significant increase in relative weight of the stomach from group B to group D(p =0.03).This study clearly shows that the aqueous extract of carica papaya seed had anti ulcerative effects and healing effect on Indomethacin induced Ulceration.
