EFFECT OF ETHANOL LEAVE EXTRACT OF SPONDIA MOMBIN ON SERUM LIPID PROFILE OF TESTOERONE PROPRIONATE INDUCED-BENIGN PROSTRATE HYPERPLASIA IN WISTAR RATS
Abstract
I Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)is often accompanied by dyslipidemia, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications. This study investigated the effects of ethanol leaf extract of Spondias mombin on serum lipid profiles in testosterone propionate-induced BPH in Wistar rats.A total of twenty-cight (28)mature male Wistar rats weighing between 200-300g. Twenty-one (21)rats induced with BPH were arbitrarily divided into three (3)sample groups (groups 2-4)consisting of seven(7)rats each, whereas seven rats (non-induced).Group 1: received 0.4ml of vehicle·(distilled water),Group 2:received 3mg/kg body weight testosterone,Group 3:received 3mg/kg testosterone+150mg/kg S.mombin,Group 4:3mg/kg testosterone +5mg/70kg Finasteride. At the end of the experimental period, the animals were fasted overnight, anesthetized with chloroform, and sacrificed. The blood was collected via cardiac puncture into a plain bottle, allowed to cloth and centrifuged to obtain the serum for biochemical assays.BPH induction significantly increased serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides(TG),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c),and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c).Ethanol leaf extract treatment significantly reversed these changes, demonstrating dose-dependent hypolipidemic effects. This study suggests that ethanol leaf extract of Spondias mombin exhibits potential hypolipidemic effects, providing a thierapeutic option.
