ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METALS CONTAMINATION IN SWEET POTATOES AND SOIL FROM THE FARM USING ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY AND X-RAY FLOURESCENCE TECHNIQUES
Abstract
Abstract
This study evaluated the contamination of soil and sweet potato samples by the heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and earlier assessed zinc (Zn). Samples were collected from four sites coded A1, A2, B1, and B2. Concentrations of Pb (0.029 – 0.092 mg/kg), Cd (0.015 – 0.049 mg/kg), Hg (0.007 – 0.024 mg/kg), and Zn (0.109 – 0.199 mg/kg) were determined and expressed in mg/kg. X‑ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis showed peak intensities correlating with the measured concentrations for each metal. Although the detected levels of Pb, Cd, and Hg were below the respective WHO and Codex Alimentarius limits (e.g., Pb
