Abstract

The project titled "Spatio-Temporal analysis of the impact of climate variability on land useand land cover change (LULCC) in Ondo state Nigeria (2018-2022)" aimed to investigate thespatio-temporal dynamics of climate on land use/land cover change (LULCC) in Ondo state, inorder to inform adaptive strategies for environmental management. the study was motivated byincreasing climatic pressures, which drive land use/land cover change, thereby threateningagricultural stability and increasing risks like flooding and heat stress due to rapid urbansprawl. The objectives were to, map and quantify the extent of land use/land cover change;analyze trends in key climate variables (temperature and precipitation); and correlate spatio-temporal land cover transitions with climate variability patterns. The methodology utilized anintegrated approach. land use/land cover change data was sourced from pre-classified landcover maps (ESRI Copernicus global land cover service, 2018-2022), and climate data(monthly mean temperature and total precipitation) was acquired from NASA power. ArcGISwas used for spatial analysis and change detection, while Microsoft Excel was employed fortime-series trend analysis of climate indicators. The key findings confirmed significantenvironmental degradation and land use shifts. The analysis revealed a 6.73% reduction invegetation cover and a corresponding 63.65% increase in bare grounds, indicating ongoingdeforestation and land degradation. concurrently, built-up areas grew by 17.11%,reflectingintense urbanization. These land use/land cover change trends were strongly associated withobserved climate variability, particularly a marked decline in rainfall in 2022. In conclusion, the project underscores the urgent need for adaptive environmental management strategies inOndo state to mitigate the negative socio-economic and environmental consequences resultingfrom the interplay of climate variability and land use change.
