THE IMPACT OF CHINA'S BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE ON NIGERIA ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by the Chinese government in 2013, has emerged as one of the most ambitious global infrastructure and investment strategies of the 21st century. As a developing country with significant infrastructural gaps and economic challenges, Nigeria has become one of China's key African partners under the BRI. This research critically examines The Impact of China’s Belt and Road Initiative on Nigeria’s Economy and Infrastructural Development using qualitative data drawn from extensive literature reviews, academic journals, and policy papers. The study is guided by the following research questions: To what extent has China invested in Nigeria since the inception of the BRI? The objectives of the research are to evaluate the volume and impact of Chinese investments, to analyze the socio-economic effects of the BRI, to identify the challenges facing project implementation, and to recommend policy strategies for maximizing benefits. The research is anchored in two complementary theoretical frameworks Dependency Theory and World Systems Theory which provide insight into the structural imbalances in global economic relations and the risk of Nigeria becoming overly reliant on Chinese capital and expertise. Findings reveal that while the BRI has contributed to notable infrastructural advancements in Nigeria such as in transportation, energy, and communication its long-term economic benefits remain debatable due to concerns over debt sustainability, limited local content participation, and weak transparency. Additionally, the research identifies poor institutional capacity, corruption, and unequal partnership dynamics as key implementation challenges. In summary, the BRI has both transformative potential and inherent risks for Nigeria. The study concludes that without strategic national oversight and stronger governance mechanisms, Nigeria may fail to fully harness the BRI’s potential. Recommendations include promoting debt sustainability, enhancing local stakeholder involvement, and enforcing transparent monitoring frameworks to ensure that the BRI becomes a true catalyst for inclusive growth and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
