DAM SUITABILITY ANALYSIS USING AN INTEGRATED GEOSPATIAL ANALYTICS, AND MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS ANALYTICAL HIERARCHICAL PROCESS (MCDA-AHP) ANALYSIS FOR OGBESE RIVER BASIN
Abstract
Water shortage is a serious problem in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria; it has an impact on the Federal Polytechnic and its environs water supply as a result of population growth, urbanization and climatic change. An integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) and Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied in this research study to assess the suitability of the dam sites on Ogbese River Basin. Six thematic layers; altitude, slope, geology classes, soil type drainage density and land use/land cover—were produced from satellite images and adopted data-set. Each criterion was weighted by AHP and then a weighted overlay in ArcGIS was used to obtain the suitability maps. The results indicate that 1.22% (3.62 km²) of the basin is highly suitable, 4.62% (13.68 km²) moderately suitable and the remaining 94.15% (278.7 km²) unsuitable, primarily because of urbanization, severe slopes or unfavourable geology types. The results reveal that the GIS–AHP technique offers a solid, transparent and economical water supply alternative for potential dam location and may be replicated for sustainable water resources development planning in Nigeria and similar environments.
