ROUTE SURVEY FOR PROPOSED ROAD FROM DAMOLA JUNCTION TO THE NORTH WESTERN BOUNDARY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
Abstract
This project presents the results of a route survey conducted for the proposed 2.05 km road from Damola Junction to the northwestern boundary of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ektii, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Longitudinal profiles are plotted at a scale of 1:2500, and cross-sections at 1:1000. The aim was to provide detailed longitudinal profiling and cross-sectioning essential for geometric design, road alignment, engineering, and construction planning. The methodology leveraged modern geospatial technology by utilizing a dual-frequency GNSS receiver in Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) mode, connected to the Ekiti State Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network for real-time, centimeter-level accuracy. Fieldwork involved reconnaissance and systematic data acquisition along the proposed centerline at 50-meter intervals, with cross-sectional data captured at ±3-meter offsets from the center of the road. Key features within the route corridor were also mapped. Data processing was performed using Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD software to generate longitudinal profiles, cross-sectional drawings, and a comprehensive surface alignment plan, using data from the Ekiti State CORS with coordinates: Easting 742638.433 m, Northing 844726.690 m, and an elevation of 439.249 m above mean sea level. The results reveal the terrain's undulating nature, suitable for road construction, with a manageable average gradient, minimal cut-and-fill requirements, and critical data on slopes and elevations necessary for determining cut-and-fill volumes, drainage design, and earthwork balancing. Environmental impacts were observed to be limited, making the proposed alignment viable. The study concludes that the integration of CORS-based GNSS technology significantly enhances the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of route surveying. Recommendations include the wider adoption of such modern technologies by survey firms and government agencies, continuous capacity building for professionals, strict quality control measures throughout the survey process to maintain data integrity, provision for drainage, erosion control, and vegetation management to enhance long-term stability. The outcome offers vital spatial insight to support sustainable infrastructure development, improved campus access, and socio-economic growth within the Damola Junction to the northwestern boundary of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ektii.
