Abstract

Route surveying plays a vital role in engineering and infrastructure development by providing accurate spatial data required for design and construction. However, traditional surveying methods are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly. This study, titled “Assessment of the Suitability of UAV and GNSS in Route Surveying (From olorunda junction through Balogun village to Olorunda Village)”, was conducted to evaluate the efficiency, accuracy, and cost- effectiveness of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) techniques in route data acquisition. The problem addressed in this study is the delay and high operational cost associated with conventional ground surveys, as well as the need for a more efficient and precise technique for route mapping. The main aim of the project is to assess the suitability of UAV and GNSS for route surveying. The specific objectives include acquiring spatial data using both UAV and GNSS, processing and analyzing the datasets, and comparing their performance in terms of accuracy, time, cost, and data density. The methodology involved reconnaissance of the study area, data acquisition using UAV at an altitude of 60 meters with 60% side lap and 80% forward lap, and GNSS data collection for ground control points. The acquired data were processed and analyzed to generate route maps and evaluate positional accuracy.
