BOX-BEHNKEN ANALYSIS OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM GMELINA SEED OIL USING A NANO CATALYST
Abstract
Biodiesel production from gmelina seed oil was investigated using titanium oxide (TiO2) as catalyst. The samples were prepared for the production process; transesterification method was adopted in the production of the biodiesel. Response surface methodology (Box Behnken) was used to predict the biodiesel yield to know if it was suitable to replace fossil fuels. A 2 level five factorial mathematical application was applied to study the effects of process parameters as there affected the biodiesel yield. These process parameters include catalyst concentration, methanol/oil molar ratio, temperature, reaction time and agitation speed. However, the results revealed that biodiesel yield of 85.73% had its optimum values at a catalyst concentration of 2wt%, methanol/oil ratio 6:1, temperature 90oC, reaction time 3 hours and agitation speed of 250 rpm.
