Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to isolate and identify bacteria associated with egusi (melon) seeds sold at Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria. Egusi seeds are widely consumed and may be exposed to microbial contamination due to poor handling, processing, and storage conditions. Samples of egusi seeds were collected from different vendors and analyzed using standard microbiological techniques. The samples were processed through serial dilution and cultured on appropriate media for bacterial growth. Isolated colonies were examined based on their morphological characteristics, Gram staining reactions, and biochemical tests for proper identification. The results revealed the presence of different bacterial species commonly associated with food contamination, indicating varying levels of bacterial load among the samples. The occurrence of these bacteria suggests possible contamination from environmental sources, handling practices, and storage conditions. The findings of this study highlight the need for improved hygienic practices during the processing and sale of egusi seeds to reduce potential public health risks. Proper handling, storage, and consumer awareness are therefore recommended to ensure food safety.
