Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Effect of ethanol leaf extract of A. paniculata on serum, creatinine, urea and uric acid in STZ-induced diabatic Wistar rats. A total of Twenty-five (25) Wistar rats were used for the experiment. These were grouped into normal control and diabetic induced groups. The diabetic rats were further grouped into four with five rats each, as follows, Twenty-five (25) Wistar rats were group into:(A) Normal control and (B) diabetic induced group. The rats were further grouped into I: Normal control animals fed with standard rat pellet and tap water II: Diabetic control, rats induced with streptozotocin and administered 0.2% tween 80 III: Diabetic rats treated with metformin (20mg/kg body weight) VI: Diabetes rats administered with ethanol leaf extract of Andrographis paniculata (250mg/kg body weight) V: Diabetic rats treated with metformin (20mg/kg body weight) VI: Diabetes rats administered with ethanol leaf extract of A. paniculata (500mg/kg body weight). Effect of ethanol leaf extract of A. paniculata on serum creatinine, urea and uric acid in STZ-induced diabatic Wistar rats. The result revealed that there were significant higher levels of creatinine, urea and uric acid in diabetic control when compared with those in the normal control. Diabetic rats treated with 20 mg/kg bwt. Metformin, 250 and 500mg/kg bwt. extracts of A. paniculata showed marginal changes in creatinine, urea and uric acid when compared with those in the normal control. But, lowered when compared with diabetic control. The creatinine and urea results showed that, there was no significant difference amongst diabetic groups treated with 20 mg/kg bwt. Metformin, 250 and 500mg/kg bwt. extracts of A. paniculata. The treated groups showed non-significant difference in uric acid levels, except group treated with 20 mg/kg bwt. Metformin whose level increased significantly and was non-significant when compared with diabetic control. These findings support the therapeutic use of A. paniculata as a valuable adjunct in managing diabetes-related renal issues.
