Abstract

Abstract The study investigates the impact of teenage pregnancy on academic performance among students at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta. A descriptive survey research method was adopted. Simple random sampling method was used to select one hundred (100) students from Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, the study employed descriptive statistics and regression analysis at a 0.05 significance level to analyze the data. The results reveal that teenage pregnancy presents numerous challenges, such as poor physical and mental health, low self-esteem, social isolation, and emotional distress, all of which hinder academic achievement. These challenges are further exacerbated by stigma, negative attitudes, and financial difficulties. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions and support systems for teenage mothers, urging collaboration between educational institutions, policymakers, and community organizations to offer resources, counseling, and academic assistance. By creating a supportive environment, the adverse effects of teenage pregnancy on academic performance can be reduced, allowing young mothers to achieve their educational goals. The study recommends the implementation of comprehensive support services in schools specifically tailored for sensitization programme geared at educating teenagers on the harmful effect of teenage pregnancy on the academic and also mental wellbeing.
