INVESTIGATION OF THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF ELEUSINE INDICA LEAF EXTRACT ON SELECTED CLINICALS ISOLATES USING ETHANOL AS SOLVENT FOR EXTRACTION
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of Eleusine indica leaf extract on selected clinical isolates using hexane as solvent for extraction. The study’s specific objectives included the identification of selected clinical pathogen (obtained from UCTH Microbiology Lab), isolation of the pathogens and assessing the effect of Eleusine indica leaf extract on the isolates. The leaf extract was tested on five bacterial species namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas spp. and Salmonella spp. All the five (5) samples were positive for bacteria growth. The five (5) different isolates were identified which includes both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The most predominant being S. aureus (45%). E. coli (25%), K. Pneumonia (15%), Pseudomonas spp (10%), and the lowest Salmonella (5%). Among the identified isolates which were placed on antibiotics Susceptibility test, Staphylococcus aureus were found resistant to Ampicillin, Amikacin, Gentamycin, Nalidxic acid, ceporex, Septrin and Augmentin while the Gram negative bacteria were resistant to Ampicillin, Gentamycin, Nalidxic acid, ceporex, while S. aureus and K. pneumonia were susceptible to Eleusine indica’s leaf with exhibition zone measurement of 11mm both. This study reveals the in vitro inhibitory effect of Eleusine indica leaf extracts on clinical isolates using hexane as solvent for extraction.
