Abstract

This study investigates the effect of flowcharts on senior secondary school students’ achievement in computer algorithms within the Ibadan Southwest Local Government Area of Oyo State. A quasi-experimental design was adopted, involving 50 students randomly assigned to experimental (taught with flowcharts) and control (taught with conventional methods) groups. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure learning outcomes, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation coefficient and a t-test. Structured questionnaire was filled by the experimental group participants to assess student Achievement Test evaluated student’s performance. There was significant main effect Flowchart teaching strategy on the student’s academic achievement in Computer Algorithm. The findings revealed whether flowchart-based instruction significantly improved students' performance in computer algorithms compared to traditional methods, in Hypothesis One students taught with traditional method possesses lower performance in the test, the Pearson correlation Coefficient for Hypothesis One (r =0.009) approximately. Hypothesis Two students taught with flowcharts shows higher academic performance in the test with Pearson correlation Coefficient (r =0.065) approximately. Hypothesis Three there was weak relationship between flowchart and traditional method of teaching Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r =0.007). The study provides recommendations for integrating visual aids like flowcharts into computer science education to enhance comprehension.
