EFFECT OF FRINGE BENEFIT ON EMPLOYEES COMMITMENT IN THE BANKING SECTOR (A CASE STUDY OF UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA AND GTB)
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of fringe benefits on employees’ commitment in the Nigerian banking sector, with specific reference to United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB). Fringe benefits such as health insurance, bonuses, housing allowance, pension schemes, and other welfare packages are critical motivational tools that influence employees’ attitudes toward their organizations. The study adopts a survey research design, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to employees of the selected banks. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used for data analysis. The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between fringe benefits and employees’ commitment, indicating that adequate and well-managed benefit packages enhance job satisfaction, reduce turnover intention, and promote organizational loyalty. The study concludes that fringe benefits play a vital role in strengthening employee commitment in the banking sector. It therefore recommends that bank management regularly review and improve employee benefit schemes to enhance workforce stability, productivity, and overall organizational performance.
