Abstract

The transmission of infection through date fruits constitutes a major threat to public health especially in Nigeria. This study was carried out to isolate and identify potential bacteria reservoirs that may be responsible for infection in Owerri, Imo State. A total of 150 swabs were taken from dates sold in three markets in Owerri. Bacteria were isolated from these dates using conventional microbiological techniques. The isolates obtained were examined and identified by colonial morphology, Gram reaction and biochemical characteristics. A total of 105 bacteria were isolated. Staphylococcus aureus was the most predominant bacteria 40 (38.1%) followed by Escherichia coli 25(23.5 %) and the least Klebsiella and shigella species 10(9.5%) each. Ekeonuwa Market was more contaminated 43 (41.0%) followed by Relief Market 35(33.3%) and the least Rochas market 27 (25.7%). The presence of these bacteria of public health importance on the date fruits may probably pose a significant public health risk to the school owerri and its surrounding. Proper hand hygiene and sanitation and washing of date fruits before eating is recommended.
