PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF CRUDE EXTRACT OF ALLIUM CEPA (RED ONION) ON THE HEART OF THE ADULT FEMALE WISTAR RAT FOLLOWING MANGANESE TOXICITY
Abstract
This study investigated the potential protective effect of crude extract of Allium cepa (red onion)
on the heart of adult female Wistar rats exposed to Manganese toxicity. Twenty-four female Wistar
rats were divided into four groups: control, Manganese only, Manganese plus Quercetin, and
Manganese plus Allium cepa. The rats were treated with respective doses of Manganese (25mg/kg)
alternate dose, Quercetin (10mg/kg) daily, and Allium cepa extract (1ml) daily for 2 weeks.
Histological analysis of the heart sections revealed that the Manganese only group exhibited no
obvious histological abnormalities. However, the Manganese plus Quercetin group displayed
histo-architectural distortion with cellular infiltration. The Manganese plus Allium cepa group
demonstrated relatively normal histo-architectural features, with observable cardiac myocytes and
intercalated discs. In terms of body weight, a significant (p
