ANALYSIS OF SOME PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS AND HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATION IN WELL WATER FROM COLLEGE OF EDUCATION WAKA BIU, BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The physicochemical parameters such as pH, conductivity and turbidity of groundwater from different locations within the College of Education Waka Biu, Borno State were determined using pH meter, conductivity meter and digital turbidimeter respectively. The concentrations of the heavy metals such as lead, copper, and chromium in the groundwater were also determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results obtained for sample A, B, and C showed that the pH 5.70 to 5.78 conductivity 309.9 to 325.1, copper 41.23, 44.21 and 39.02 ppm and chromium 41.23, 44.21 and 39.02 and lead for sample A and B 20.83, and 7.65 levels are within the WHO limit except the turbidity 3.8, 4.3 and 3.4NTU and lead in sample B is 7.65 whose values are above the WHO maximum permissible limits. These suggest that the consumers of the water are prone to health hazards of high levels of turbidity and lead. The findings of this project provides crucial information regarding the quality and safety of groundwater in the study area.
