DEFORMATION MONITORING OF NEW AUDITORIUM FEDERAL SCHOOL OF SURVEYING, OYO
Abstract
A deformation survey is a specialized aspect of engineering surveying concerned with the precise
observation and analysis of structural movements over time. It involves accurately determining
positional, dimensional, and shape variations in a structure to assess its geometric stability and
identify deformations that could affect safety or functionality. Essentially, deformation monitoring
acts as a diagnostic tool for evaluating the structural health of a building, allowing early detection
of physical changes resulting from environmental factors, loading conditions, foundation
settlement, or material fatigue. In this study, a geodetic control network was established around
the newly constructed auditorium at the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, to monitor its structural
behavior. Observations were carried out at multiple epochs using high-precision geodetic
instruments, including a Total Station, Digital Level, and GNSS receivers. The collected data were
processed and analyzed using Leica Infinity, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Excel for coordinate
adjustment, displacement computation. The results revealed minor horizontal and vertical
displacements within acceptable engineering tolerances. However, slight movement trends were
observed, underscoring the importance of continuous monitoring to prevent potential long-term
deformation. The study concludes that periodic deformation surveys and preventive maintenance
are essential for ensuring the long-term stability, safety, and functionality of the building.
Furthermore, the research highlights the effectiveness of integrating multiple geodetic techniques
and analytical tools in deformation monitoring, providing a practical framework for similar
structural assessment projects. The building covers a total area of 857.5101m2
and has a height
of 36.6480m. The observed millimeter variations indicate that the building is not considered
stable, possibly resulting from measurement inaccuracies or environmental hazards;
Hence, periodic monitoring is recommended to prevent potential structural failure or damages
