Abstract

This study was undertaken to evaluate the nutritional and phytochemical composition of the underutilized wild fruit, Durumi (Ficus polita). The aim was to scientifically investigate its potential as a source of food and bioactive compounds. Mature fruits of Ficus polita were collected, cleaned, dried, and pulverized into a fine powder for analysis. The proximate analysis was conducted using standard analytical methods to determine the nutritional components. This revealed the presence of moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, carbohydrates, and energy value. Concurrently, qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening was performed to identify and measure the concentration of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and phenols. The results from the proximate analysis indicate that Ficus polita fruit contains significant levels of carbohydrates and crude fiber, suggesting its potential as a good energy source and for digestive health. It also showed appreciable amounts of protein, ash (minerals), and a low fat content. The phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of a wide spectrum of bioactive compounds, with notable quantities of flavonoids and tannins, which are known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
