Abstract

This study explores the challenges facing the implementation of freedom of information (FOI) in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS). Despite the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in 2011, which was intended to promote transparency, accountability, and public access to information, significant barriers continue to hinder its effective application. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including interviews, surveys, and document analysis, this study identifies key obstacles such as bureaucratic resistance, political interference, lack of awareness, and institutional inefficiencies within BCOS. The findings highlight the broader systemic issues that impede media transparency in Nigeria and underscore the need for policy reforms and strengthened institutional frameworks. The study concludes with recommendations aimed at improving FOI practices at BCOS and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the FOIA in Nigeria, thereby contributing to a more informed and participatory democratic process
