Abstract

This research investigates the impact of institutional infrastructure on students’ academic performance at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Nigeria. With increasing emphasis on the role of physical learning environments in educational outcomes, this study explores how architectural design, facility quality, and user experience influence student motivation, engagement, and academic achievement. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from 120 structured student questionnaires with qualitative observations across five key academic buildings. The study evaluates infrastructural elements such as lighting, ventilation, seating ergonomics, spatial layout, and access to teaching technology, all of which contribute to the quality of the educational environment. Findings reveal that while most students affirm that institutional buildings positively impact their focus and academic performance, critical gaps persist— particularly in ventilation, maintenance, and access to modern learning tools. Multipurpose facilities like the University Lecture Rooms and Alakija Hall received high utilization ratings, yet several facilities showed signs of deterioration that may hinder learning outcomes. Respondents consistently linked environmental quality to motivation and concentration. The study concludes that infrastructure serves as a vital, though often underappreciated, pillar in academic performance. Recommendations include regular maintenance protocols, integration of smart classroom technologies, ergonomic furniture updates, and inclusive architectural improvements. By highlighting the intersection of design thinking and academic success, this work reinforces the role of architecture not only in shaping physical space but also in fostering equitable, effective educational experiences in Nigerian private universities.
