Abstract

ABSTRACT Antibiotics are commonly used during pregnancy to treat bacterial infections; however, inappropriate use may pose health risks to both the mother and the fetus. This study examined the effects of antibiotic use among pregnant women in Saki Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted, involving pregnant women attending selected antenatal clinics within the local government area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to assess the types of antibiotics used, sources of prescription, level of awareness, and perceived effects on pregnancy outcomes. The findings revealed that while antibiotics play a significant role in preventing and treating maternal infections, a considerable number of pregnant women used antibiotics without medical prescription. Commonly reported effects included gastrointestinal discomfort, allergic reactions, and concerns about fetal health. Limited knowledge regarding safe antibiotic use during pregnancy and easy access to over-the-counter antibiotics were identified as major contributing factors. The study concludes that although antibiotics are beneficial when appropriately prescribed, misuse during pregnancy may lead to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. It is therefore recommended that health education on safe antibiotic use be strengthened during antenatal care, and regulations on the sale of antibiotics without prescription be strictly enforced to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Saki Local Government Area
