Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the crucial role of editing in enhancing the quality of Nigerian movies, with a particular focus on its influence on narrative coherence, visual appeal, technical execution, and audience engagement. As a central component of post-production, editing shapes the structure, rhythm, and emotional depth of a film, making it indispensable in cinematic storytelling. Drawing on qualitative research through extensive secondary data analysis, including scholarly literature, industry reports, film reviews, and case studies, this research critically examines the editing practices prevalent in Nollywood and their impact on film quality. The findings reveal that effective editing techniques such as continuity editing, montage, cross-cutting, and sound synchronization significantly contribute to the aesthetic and narrative value of Nigerian films. However, challenges such as inadequate training, limited access to professional-grade editing tools, and budget constraints hinder consistent post-production excellence in the industry. Despite these limitations, well-edited Nigerian movies continue to gain recognition on global platforms, underscoring the need for greater investment in editor development and digital infrastructure. The study concludes that prioritizing editing in Nollywood will not only elevate the technical and artistic standards of Nigerian films but also strengthen their competitiveness in the international film market. It recommends improved training opportunities, adoption of modern editing technologies, and deeper collaboration between editors and directors as key strategies for achieving sustainable growth in the Nigerian film industry.
