Abstract

ABSTRACT This study critically examines the impact of domestic crises on Nigeria’s national security, with particular focus on the Boko Haram insurgency. As one of the most devastating internal threats in Nigeria’s recent history, Boko Haram has not only disrupted the socio-political fabric of the nation but also exposed significant weaknesses in its security infrastructure. The research explore the root causes of domestic crisis in Nigeria, with a focus on the Boko Haram insurgency . Adopting both the Frustration-Aggression Theory, the study provides a robust theoretical framework for understanding the insurgency’s origins and the broader implications of domestic instability on state security. Data was obtained through a combination of primary sources (interviews and questionnaires) and secondary materials, including scholarly articles, government reports, and verified media accounts. Findings reveal that Boko Haram has severely undermined Nigeria’s national security through mass displacement, loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure, disruption of education, and erosion of public trust in government institutions. The insurgency has also created humanitarian crises, strained military resources, and increased regional insecurity across the Lake Chad Basin. The study identifies critical gaps in counter-insurgency strategies, particularly in areas of intelligence, civil-military relations, and rehabilitation of affected populations. The research concludes that military solutions alone are insufficient to address the complex nature of domestic crises. Instead, it recommends a multidimensional approach involving inclusive governance, poverty alleviation, youth engagement, deradicalization programs, and enhanced collaboration between security agencies and local communities. These strategies are essential for restoring public confidence and building long-term national resilience. First, the government should prioritize socio-economic development programs targeting the population, most especially the northeast region. This includes investing in infrastructure, education, vocational training, and job creation initiatives to tackle unemployment and poverty key drivers of insurgency. Such investments should be community-driven and culturally sensitive to ensure local ownership and effectiveness. resolution in Nigeria.
