Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to examine coconut shell ash (CSA) stabilization effects on lateritic soil and the suitability of the stabilized soil for subbase material in road pavement. Sample of lateritic soil was stabilized with coconut shell ash content of 0, 2, 4,6,8,and 10 percent respectively. Index and strength properties of the CSA-soil mix were determined. The result of Atterberge limit shows, liquid limit (LL) and plasticity index (PI) decrease with higher CSA content, meanwhile the Plastic limit increase with higher CSA content. Therefore, at CSA content of 6% gave LL of 34.6% and PI of 9.9% respectively satisfying NGS ,1997. LL ≤ 35% and PI 12% for subbase. The OMC increase from 19.02% to 19.91% and the MDD decreases from 1.87 g/cm3 to 1.82 g/cm3 with CSA addition. The CSA stabilized soil having a soaked CBR value of 41.2 % at 6 % CSA content satisfy NGS 1997, CBR of 30 % minimum for subbase. Therefore, the stabilized soil can be used as subbase m
