A REVIEW OF NIGERIAN LAWS EFFECTIVENES IN PREVENTING TRAFFICKING OF CHILDREN.
Abstract
Various international and national legal tools are in place to prevent and combat child trafficking, yet the issue of child trafficking persists and is deeply ingrained in Nigeria. This study explores the effectiveness of Nigerian laws in preventing child trafficking, highlighting the obstacles and limitations hindering the laws' effective enforcement. The study is based on a thorough examination of important national and international legal frameworks, such as the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, the Child Rights Act, and the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. The socioeconomic and cultural elements that support the ongoing existence of child trafficking in Nigeria are also examined in this study. The findings of the research highlight serious flaws in the institutional and legal frameworks that undermine attempts to stop and prevent child trafficking. The study emphasizes the need for a more thorough and well-coordinated strategy to address the underlying factors that contribute to child trafficking, such as ignorance, poverty, and cultural norms that support the exploitation of children. The study's conclusion calls for a fundamental shift in the way that child trafficking is addressed, highlighting the necessity of strong laws, efficient law enforcement, and ongoing public awareness initiatives to stop child trafficking in Nigeria.
