DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION ATTENDANCE SYSTEM
Abstract
This project shows the design of an RFID, Radio Frequency Identification Attendance
System for Edo State University Iyamho. The aims of this work were specifically geared
towards providing a solution to the current way attendances are being taken
particularly focused on the time it takes to write attendances. The system was tested in
a constrained environment mimicking how attendances would be taken while
monitoring parameters such as read rate to monitor systems efficiency. Experimental
results showed that the system achieved 100% accuracy at read intervals of 4–5
seconds, with an optimal read range of 5–7 cm. While the system successfully handled
duplicate tag entries and common errors such as unregistered tags or temporary
network failures, it was limited in its ability to read multiple tags simultaneously as it
was configured to. Comparisons between manual attendance and the RFID system
showed the system to be more efficient. The system integrates key hardware components
like the ESP8266EX microcontroller, the RC522 RFID reader, the LM2596 buck
converter, and a 1602 LCD display. Software dev and system configuring was done
using Arduino IDE with various supporting libraries. Design calculations showed that
the adapter used was more than sufficient and would allow for addition of future
components to the system
