Abstract

This study investigates the protective effects of crude extract of Allium cepa (red onions)against manganese-induced hepatotoxicity in adult female Wistar rats.A total of 24 Wistar rats were divided into four groups (six rats each)based on their body weights:Group 1(control,70-90 g),Group 2(manganese only,120-130 g),Group 3 (manganese +quercetin,100-120 g),and Group 4(manganese +Allium cepa,90-100 g).Following a 21-day administration period, the rats were sacrificed, and liver samples were collected for histological examination after being fixed in formalin solution. Results indicated a significant weight loss in Group 2(manganese only) compared to the control group, while Groups 3(manganese +quercetin)and 4 (manganese +Allium cepa)exhibited relatively normal body weights.Histological analysis revealed normal hepatic cytoarchitecture in the control group, characterized by intact hepatocytes. In contrast,Group 2 displayed pronounced histoarchitectural distortion, evidenced by significant vacuolation and stromal changes.Group 3 (manganese +quercetin)also presented with histoarchitectural alterations, marked by vacuolation and congestion of the central vein. However,Group 4(manganese + Allium cepa)showed relatively preserved hepatic architecture, highlighted by normal central veins, sinusoids, hepatocytes, and Kupffer cells. These findings suggest that Allium cepa possesses hepatoprotective properties against manganese-induced liver toxicity,as indicated by the preservation of liver structure compared to both the control and manganese-only groups
