THE CHALLENGES IN THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE STUDENTS IN SCIENCE STUDENTS IN POLYTECHNIC (A CASE STUDY OF ABDU GUSAU POLYTECHNIC)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The education and training of Library and Information Science (LIS) students in polytechnics present unique challenges, particularly in adapting to the evolving demands of the information society. This study focuses on identifying the challenges faced by LIS students at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for professional practice. Key areas of exploration include inadequate infrastructure, limited access to modern technological tools, insufficient practical training, and outdated curricula that fail to address emerging trends in digital information management. The study also investigates the impact of resource constraints, such as insufficient funding, inadequate library facilities, and limited access to e-learning platforms. Additionally, challenges related to the training of lecturers and the integration of ICT skills in the curriculum are examined. Through a combination of surveys, interviews, and observation, data are collected from students, faculty, and administrative staff to understand the extent of these challenges and their effect on student outcomes. The findings reveal that while students are eager to learn and adapt to modern information management systems, institutional barriers hinder their progress. The study concludes with recommendations for addressing these challenges, including curriculum updates, improved access to digital resources, and increased investment in ICT infrastructure to ensure that LIS students are equipped with the necessary skills for the modern workforce.
