Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the role of community radio in rural development, with a focus on selected communities in Talata Mafara Community Radio e, Nigeria. The objective was to determine how community radio serves as a medium for information dissemination, education, cultural promotion, and mobilization for rural development initiatives. The study adopted the survey research design, using a structured questionnaire administered to 400 respondents, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with findings presented in tables and percentages. The results revealed that community radio significantly contributes to rural development by providing timely agricultural information, promoting health awareness, enhancing civic participation, and preserving local culture. Respondents indicated that radio was their most accessible medium of communication due to low literacy levels and limited internet penetration. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited broadcast range, and government restrictions were identified as constraints to the effectiveness of community radio. The study concludes that community radio remains a vital tool for grassroots communication and development, particularly in rural areas with limited access to mainstream media. It recommends increased investment in community radio infrastructure, capacity building for broadcasters, and supportive policies to enhance its role in rural transformation. Keywords: Community Radio, Rural Development, Development Communication, Talata Mafara Community Radio e.
